Impression

Take a hydro-colloidal, silicon or rubber impression. A bar is wax-coated by the technician and cast in one piece. The bar should be 1-1.5 mm thick and extend two to three teeth on each side of the fracture. In occlusion the thickness of the bar can be reduced to 0.5-1 mm (Fig. 3).

For bicuspid/molar section repairs in the upper or lower jaw, avoid placing the bar in occlusion or articulation so as not to raise the bite. Upper jaw repairs can give rise to a change in bite height. In which case the whole bite should be raised. Alternatively, lingual enamel can be ground away and eased in the lower jaw.

Cast the bar preferably in Type IV alloy. You can use ordinary Class III gold but the bar must then be stronger.
